The gap

What Claude gives developers, and what it loses

Claude has a title-matching sidebar search, starred chats, Projects on paid plans and an account-wide export that arrives by email and expires in 24 hours. None of them find the regex you fixed in March by searching for the error message.

A coding session is worth keeping when it ends in a working fix. In Claude that fix sits inside a reply in a chat titled by its first line, one of hundreds. The sidebar search matches titles; a Project scopes context but has no subfolders or message search; and the native export queues an archive of your whole account rather than giving you the one conversation as a file.

AI Toolbox keeps the Claude interface and adds the missing layer in the browser: an index of every message you can query by function name or traceback, folders with subfolders, bookmarks on the replies that solved something, a vault of every artifact Claude built, an @@ picker that pulls an earlier thread into a new one, and per-conversation export in developer-friendly formats.   • Search by error message. Native search matches chat titles, not the traceback inside a reply.
  • Group chats by repo or service. The sidebar is one recency-ordered list, and a Project is a context container without subfolders.
  • Export one conversation as Markdown or JSON. The native export is an account-wide archive, emailed, with a link that dies after 24 hours.
  • Keep the artifacts. Components and pages Claude builds stay buried in the chats that produced them.

The longer you use Claude for code, the more of your solved problems sit in old replies. Search, folders and export are what make that history reusable.

Step by step

A developer workflow in five steps

From install to an exported fix. Steps one to four are on the free plan; the Exact Match toggle, Markdown export and bulk export in step five are where Premium starts.

  1. Install AI Toolbox from the Chrome Web StoreWorks in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc. Open the popup, switch the Claude module on and approve the one-time permission for claude.ai.
  2. Let the index build, then create folders per repo or serviceExisting conversations are indexed locally in the background. Manage Folders, then Add: API Debug, Infra, Code Review, with subfolders per incident. File a chat by typing part of its title; there is nothing to drag.
  3. Bookmark the reply that fixed itClick the bookmark icon in the message's action bar, on the fix itself or on the prompt that produced it. The Bookmarks panel next to Share scrolls you straight back, even in a 200-turn thread.
  4. Search before you ask againOpen Search History from the floating AI Toolbox menu and type the error message or function name. Every matching message shows its highlighted sentence with a Q or A label, and @@ pulls that thread into a new chat as context.

Questions people ask before installing

Can I search Claude conversations by error message or stack trace?

Yes. AI Toolbox indexes every message in your Claude history in the browser, so a traceback, function name or config key returns each reply that contains it, highlighted and labelled Q or A. Open Search History from the floating AI Toolbox menu on claude.ai; there is no default keyboard shortcut on Claude, and you can assign one at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Free shows five results per query; Premium shows all of them and adds the Exact Match toggle, which is what makes a punctuation-heavy stack trace findable.

How do developers organize Claude conversations by project?

Create a root folder per repository or service and subfolders per incident or feature, then add conversations by searching their name inside the folder. Claude Projects scope context on paid Claude plans but have no subfolders; AI Toolbox folders work on any plan across your whole history. The free plan includes two root folders with unlimited subfolders; Premium removes the cap.

Can I bookmark a working code snippet in Claude?

Yes, at message level. Which export format should I use for code?

JSON when a script needs the raw messages and metadata. PDF for a styled, paginated record with code rendered. The free plan exports as TXT; Markdown, JSON, PDF and bulk export are Premium.

Does the 1 million token context window change anything?

Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 both take up to 1 million tokens, so whole repositories and long logs fit in one conversation. AI Toolbox does not change that limit; it makes those long sessions searchable afterwards, and its Context Window Meter shows how much of the window the current chat has used before you hit it.

Does AI Toolbox send my code anywhere?

No. The search index, folders, bookmarks and saved prompts live in your browser, and every search runs locally. Conversation content is never sent to our servers; the only account detail that reaches them is the email used to verify a Premium plan. PDF export is the one exception: the conversation is rendered on our server and returned without a copy being kept.

Which browsers work?

Any Chromium browser installed from the Chrome Web Store: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc. There is no Firefox version.
